Researchers find necessity in checking for BRCA1 gene mutation

Researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research in the UK found that women under 50 should be tested for the BRCA1 gene, as one in three breast cancer patients with triple-negative breast cancer got the disease because of the mutation in the BRCA1 gene.

The researchers believe the change in testing requirements can help hundreds of women identify the cancer in the early stages. However, there is a huge cost involved in switching up the screening and testing process.

"There are hurdles to overcome so that NHS testing services can cope with more BRCA1 testing, but we’re moving towards an era of faster and cheaper genetic testing, so it will soon be possible." said lead author professor Nazneen Rahman.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer. However, the death rate has been decreasing since 1990 due to advancements in research along with breast cancer breakthrough news. There are currently 2.5 million survivors in the United States.
