More women surgeons in the field of breast cancer

Drs. Monet Bowling, Erika Rager and Kandice Ludwig are part of a growing number of women doctors who are choosing to undertake general surgery training, according to the Indy Star.

Breast cancer surgeries are also increasingly performed by young, female doctors, reports the news source. At the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center, it is more likely than not that a breast cancer surgeon will be a woman under 40 years of age.

"Most women, now, when they need to be treated by a breast cancer surgeon, they seek out women, in the same way that women seek out women obstetrician-gynecologists," said Dr. Bowling.

According to the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, the number of women choosing general surgery training has increased from 32 to 40 percent.

About one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in her lifetime and the search for a breast cancer cure continues, with funding from organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
