Michigan teen wins Intel Science Talent Award for breast cancer research project

Nithin Tumma, a 17-year-old senior from Port Huron Northern High School in Michigan, is the winner of the $100,000 Intel Science Talent Award and was honored with his prize this past Tuesday night, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Tumma was awarded for his work on molecular pathways and proteins, and how they are involved in breast cancer. His research could lead to less toxic and more specific treatment therapies for breast cancer patients, according to the news source.

Tumma's project was chosen out of 1,838 other high school seniors and there were 39 finalists who were invited to the award ceremony this week, the media outlet reports. These science awards have been around since 1942, and the winners have gone on to win Nobel Prizes, Field Medals and more.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. It is the second most common form of cancer among women, along with the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women.
