Mediterranean diet may fight against breast cancer

Although the Mediterranean diet has long been touted as incredibly healthy, there might be a new reason to adopt the way of living.

In fact, a new study has proven that eating plan, which emphasizes healthy fats, fruits and vegetables, may lower a woman's risk of developing breast cancer after menopause, according to Reuters.

The data, which was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was collected from more than 14,000 Greek women who were followed for over a decade. The researchers discovered that those who followed the Mediterranean diet closely were up to 22 percent less likely to develop breast cancer.

The scientists concluded that the encouraging results may be linked to the fact that the plan lowers estrogen levels, which promotes the growth of most breast cancer cells. The regime is also highly rich in antioxidants.

According to the MayoClinic, those who are looking to start themselves on a Mediterranean diet should also consume plenty of fish, seafood and red wine. Also, another vital component of the way of living is getting plenty of exercise.ADNFCR-2795-ID-19920370-ADNFCR
