Doctor chats about advances in breast cancer treatment

While there have been advances over the past few decades in all types of cancer, breast cancer remains one of the most noteworthy.

The Stoughton Journal spoke with oncologist Dr Bob McName, who certainly agrees. The veteran medical professional credits new breakthroughs for the spikes in survival rates, such as estrogen-blocking medication and new developments in chemotherapy and radiation.

"If you think of chemotherapy as being like a shotgun that hits the cancer but does a lot of collateral damage, biological therapy is more like a rifle. In the cancer cell, we can see certain pathways and target them," McNamee told the news source.

This is certainly wonderful news for women around the world. While certain factors, such as diet, exercise habits and genetics play a role in a one's risk of having the disease, the truth is that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during their lifetime.

Still, McName remains optimistic about the progress made so far.

"Just as HIV has become a chronic disease, breast cancer is going the same way," McNamee told the news source.
