British women thanks lettuce for discovery of breast cancer early on

Elsie Campbell developed a consistent love for salad, not only would she eat lettuce daily, but she would go through three or four heads each day, according to ABC News.

"After work, I'd go straight to the fridge and cut a wedge out of the lettuce and just eat it right there," Elsie of Derby, England, told the media outlet. "It was bizarre."

Eventually she decided to go to the doctor, and was diagnosed with the early stages of breast cancer. Both Elsie and her husband Jim believe the lettuce is what caught the cancer so early on, according to the news source.

Jim is a forensic scientist and discovered that lettuce contains sulforaphane, which exhibits anticancer traits. This is why he believes she was eating so much of it.

However, there is no scientific evidence to base his ideas off of, as many doctors do not consider this breast cancer breakthrough news. Elsie has been cancer-free for the past eight years.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will eventually be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. However, the survival rate of these individuals has risen, and there are currently 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. today.
