Breast Cancer Research Foundation receives $370,000

A Mother's Day promotion event led to the donate of more than $370,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The gift came from Planet Fitness, who gave $10 to the breast cancer organization for each new membership. Last year, Planet Fitness also took part in fundraising to help fight breast cancer, raising about $213,000 for the cause.

"The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is thrilled by this remarkable donation. It is a testament to the commitment and dedication of Planet Fitness," said the president of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation Myra J. Biblowit. "Through this donation, Planet Fitness will support one BCRF research project in 2011-2012 and will ensure our ability to beat breast cancer in our lifetime. We are extremely grateful for this generous gift."

Memberships for Planet Fitness cost about $10 for a one-time fee, plus $10 a month, during the Mother's Day promotion. Planet Fitness is the fastest expanding franchise of its kind in the country, according to the company.

All women over the age of 40 in the U.S. should have yearly mammograms, according to the American Cancer Society. More than 200,000 women are diagnosed with the illness each year in the country, making breast cancer the second most common form of cancer among women, after skin cancer. The death rate of breast cancer is the second in the country; that of lung cancer being the first.
