3-D mammograms bring hope for increased levels of early breast detection

A recent breast cancer breakthroughs news development allows patients in the state of Georgia to receive state of the art three-dimensional mammogram scans.

According to CBS-affiliate WRDW out of Augusta, the scanning process is relatively new and the FDA only approved the technology for patient use in February of this year. Georgia's Health Sciences University is the first place where patients will be able to receive the advanced screening.

Dr. Suzanne Thigpen told the source that previously, "We just looked at all of the tissue piled on top of each other. You couldn't tell what things are at what level. This is as big a jump forward from the time we didn't do mammography, until the time we started doing them."

With the new technology, doctors are better equipped to accurately isolate the location, size and shape of a tumor.

Early detection of breast cancer is instrumental to the survival of victims, as survival rates drastically decrease the longer a person goes without noticing or treating the disease. The American Cancer Society reports that 88 percent of women with Stage I breast cancer survive five years or more, while only 15 percent live at least five years with Stage IV breast cancer.
